COLUMBIA, SC…(January 2012)
Russell Miller of Saluda was recently named
recipient of the Outstanding Agribusiness Award for
the Mid-State Region by the SC Young Farmer and
Agribusiness Association at a state conference held
in Columbia, SC.
Mr.
Miller was presented a framed certificate and cash
award by ArborOne Farm Credit who sponsors the
recognition program in concert with the SC Young
Farmer and Agribusiness organization.
Owner of NAPA Auto Parts in
Johnston, Mr. Miller’s operation specializes in
filters, hydraulics, and tractor parts. He is
responsible for ordering, stocking, selling, and
making deliveries. His wife Candice does all
bookwork. Purchasing the business in 2008, Mr.
Miller’s store employs two.
An FFA alumnus, Mr. Miller
is also involved with Little League . He is an
active member of Midland Volunteer Fire Department,
St Williams Catholic Church, and the Saluda County
Young Farmer and Agribusiness Chapter. He and his
wife have two children, Texanna and Quinten.

Education instructor at Saluda High School, serves
as the professional advisor to the local Young
Farmer and Agribusiness group.
Miss Saluda Pageant
Saluda,
SC (August 10, 2011) - The Second Annual Miss Saluda
Beauty Pageant was held in conjunction with the
Saluda Young Farmers Organization, the Saluda
Tractor Pull. The title of Miss Saluda is one of the
most coveted in SaludaCounty. The pageant was held in the
historical
Saluda,
SC theater on August 6, 2011. A DVD

Saluda Young Farmer Scholarship Award
Winners
Saluda, SC (July 14, 2011)
The Saluda Young Farmer Scholarship is presented in
the amount of $2,000 to three local students.
Scholarship applications were judged and awarded
based on Majoring in Agriculture or Related Field,
Financial Need, Grades, Community
Service/Involvement and Leadership Activities, and
Essay. This year’s winners are Curtis Berry, Alex
Coleman, and Cameron Durham.

Curtis Hunter Berry
is the son of Luke Berry and Teresa Porter.
He is a rising freshmen at Clemson
University where he will be majoring in
Animal Science-Pre-veterinary Medicine.
After Clemson he wants to go to UGA for his
vet degree and open a clinic in Saluda.
Alex is the son of
Cheryl Coleman. He is a rising freshmen at
Clemson University where he will be majoring
in Ag Mechanics. After collage he plans on
returning to Saluda to find a job locally.
Cameron Durham is
the son of John and Cindy Durham. He is
attending Piedmont Technical College
majoring in Diversified Agriculture. His
plans after college are to secure a job in
the agriculture field which will include his
passion for cattle.

Riley, Jr., of Saluda was recently named recipient

Mr. Riley was

Co-owner of F.D.
Riley and Son, Mr. Riley is responsible for buying
and replacing equipment, planning, quoting, and
bidding jobs.Starting the business in 1977 with the
purchase of a bulldozer, Mr. Riley’s company now
operates with 30 pieces of equipment.Recent jobs include excavation work for
Columbia Farms feed mill, erosion control work for Fort
Jackson, and clearing of
the Saluda Piggly Wiggly location.Mr. Riley contributes much of the success of
his operation to his father.
An FFA alumnus, Mr.
Riley is also involved with the family dairy and
beef cattle operation, Riley Farms, LLC.He is an active member of the Saluda County
Cattlemen’s Association, the Saluda County Forestry
Association and the Saluda County Young Farmer and
Agribusiness Chapter.

The William A Whitfield Saluda Young Farmer
Scholarship is presented in the amount of $1,500 to
four local students. Scholarship applications
are based on the student being an agriculture major,
their grades, community and leadership activities,
as well as an essay. This year’s winners are Brian
Lawrence Bushey, Creighton Riley Price, Sally Ruth
Yon, and Thomas Drake Yon.

Brian is the son of Bill and
Marlene Bushey. He is a rising freshmen at
Piedmont Tech where he will be majoring in General
Engineering and Business Management. His
future goal is to work in an agricultural related
field in Saluda and surrounding counties.
Creighton is the son of
Ansel and Amy Price. He is a rising junior at
Clemson University majoring in Agricultural
Mechanization and Business. His plans after
college are to secure a job in the agribusiness
field.
Sally is the daughter of
Kevin and Lydia Yon. She is a rising sophomore
at Clemson University where she is majoring in
Agricultural Education. Her future plans are
to return to this area and teach agriculture.
Drake is the son of Kevin
and Lydia Yon. He is a rising freshmen at
Clemson University where he will be majoring in
Agricultural Economics. After college he plans
to return to the family farm.

Bushey Wins Energy
Efficiency Award
William & Marlene Bushey
Columbia, SC (January 2010)…William and
Marlene Bushey, members of the Saluda County
Young Farmer and Agribusiness Chapter, are
the Mid-state Region winners of the SC Young
Farmer and Agribusiness Association Energy
Efficiency Award which is sponsored by Duke
Energy, SCANA, Inc., and the Pee Dee
Electric Cooperative. The Busheys received a
cash award and an engraved plaque in
recognition of their success in the
efficient use of energy in their home.

Saluda Young Farmer -
Agribusiness Chapter Tops in State
Columbia, SC (January
2010)…The Saluda County Young Farmer and
Agribusiness Chapter was recognized as the
Outstanding Chapter in South Carolina at a recent
conference of agriculturalists held in Charleston,
SC.
Nationally recognized for its sponsorship of a Truck
and Tractor Pull, the Saluda Chapter is affiliated
with the National Tractor Pullers Association. Their
annual show draws entries and spectators from
throughout the southern states. Funds raised at the
event are used by the chapter to provide a number of
college scholarships valued at $2000 each to area
students. In addition to awarding scholarships, the
chapter financially supports a number of educational
and community organizations and projects each year,
including sponsoring a dinner in recognition of the
Saluda County Law Enforcement officials and
Volunteer Fire Department volunteers.
The chapter makes its land area and other facilities
available annually for the Palmetto Antique Tractor
Show, the Saluda High School Rodeo and the Saluda
County Cattlemen’s Association Equipment Sale.
The widely recognized Saluda County Farm-City Week
“Taste and See” event is supported by the Young
Farmer and Agribusiness Chapter and attended by many
of its members.
The chapter received a cash award and an engraved
plaque from the Southern States Cooperative which
sponsors the recognition program in concert with the
State Young Farmer and Agribusiness Association.

public affairs with the SC Young Farmer and
Agribusiness Association. “The chapter officers,
members and advisor are to be commended for
receiving this superb recognition at the state level
which is indeed a notable laurel to come to the
Saluda County agribusiness community,” he added.

Columbia, SC….Russell
Miller of Saluda was recently named state winner
in the Outstanding Chapter President Award
category by the South Carolina Young Farmer-
Agribusiness Association, according to John W.
Parris, state director of public affairs for the
organization.
The announcement of Mr. Miller’s selection for
this prestigious award was made at the annual
conference of the organization held in Myrtle
Beach. He received a plaque and cash award from
the Massey-Ferguson Company who sponsors the
recognition program in concert with the adult
agricultural education organization.
